Day 1 Aug 23 (Sun)

Arrival & easy first day

  • Drop bags at the hotel, grab lunch nearby
  • Walk the Aliados → Clérigos → Livraria Lello → Carmo loop (1–2 km, all flat-ish on top of the hill) Map
  • Sunset at Miradouro da Vitória — free panoramic views over the river Map
  • Dinner at Cervejaria Gazela — try the famed cachorrinho (Portuguese hot dog) the kids will love Map
Day 2 Aug 24 (Mon)

Classic Porto

  • Breakfast at Mercado do Bolhão — Mondays it's open and lively (closed Sundays) Map
  • São Bento Station — azulejo tile murals (free, ~20 min) Map
  • Livraria Lello — book a timed entry online to skip the line (€12 pp, refunded against book purchase) Map
  • Sé do Porto — the cathedral and viewpoint Map
  • Walk down medieval lanes to Cais da Ribeira for lunch by the water Map
  • Cross the lower deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge on foot (upper deck is the metro — kids will think it's wild) Map
  • Afternoon in Vila Nova de Gaia: port wine cellar — Graham's (best-in-class tour & views), Taylor's (gardens & peacocks), or Ferreira (Portuguese-owned). Adults taste, teens get juice or a sip. Map

Day 3 Aug 25 (Tue)

Douro Valley day trip ⭐

  • Train + boat option: São Bento → Régua (~2 hr scenic), boat upriver to Pinhão, train back. ~€60 pp. Map
  • OR private guided tour with driver: pickup at hotel, 2 quintas, lunch with a view. ~€150 pp but zero logistics — worth it for a family of 5.
  • Quinta do Bomfim in Pinhão — excellent for tastings and a riverside stop Map
Day 4 Aug 26 (Wed)

Guimarães day trip ⭐

  • Morning train from Porto Campanhã → Guimarães (~1 hr, ~€8 pp). "Aqui Nasceu Portugal" — Portugal was literally founded here in the 12th century. Map
  • Castelo de Guimarães — the 10th-century stone keep where Afonso Henriques was born; UNESCO-listed Map
  • Paço dos Duques de Bragança — the 15th-century Ducal Palace next door, with Flemish tapestries and the great banqueting hall Map
  • Lunch in the medieval old town around Largo da Oliveira (UNESCO heart) — try Restaurante Cor de Tangerina or a tasca on Rua de Santa Maria Map
  • Walk the historic centre — Igreja de São Gualter, Largo do Toural, narrow medieval lanes
  • Optional: cable car (Teleférico) up to Penha mountain park for huge views, ~10 min ride Map
  • Late afternoon train back to Porto. Easy dinner near hotel.
Day 5 Aug 27 (Thu)

Matosinhos beach + grilling streets ⭐

  • Metro Linha A from Trindade → Matosinhos Sul (~25 min, easy with kids) Map
  • Morning: Praia de Matosinhos — long Atlantic beach with manageable waves, lifeguards in August, full shower facilities Map
  • Lunch on Rua Heróis de França — the legendary "grilling street" where every restaurant runs a charcoal grill on the sidewalk. Tito and Sebastião are local favourites. Arguably the best grilled fish/octopus in northern Portugal. Map
  • Afternoon: walk back along the boardwalk through Foz to central Porto (~1 hour) — or metro back if anyone's wiped
  • Evening: light dinner near hotel, pack for Lisbon (pre-9 AM Alfa Pendular tomorrow)
